Choosing the Right Bathroom Tiles

When it comes to choosing bathroom tiles, there are a few important things that you should consider in order to make a decision that will satisfy your safety, aesthetic and economic needs.

First of all, remember that tiles are things that are both decorative and functional. Often, there is a tradeoff between those two worlds, but current fashion actually brings them together in interesting ways, especially with regards to the material the tiles are made from.

Common choices include:

  • Linoleum Tiles
  • Ceramic Tiles
  • Glass Tiles
  • Stone Tiles

Tiles made from minerals also have a further option: glazed or unglazed.

Glazed tiles have a coating of liquid glass applied to them after they are made which makes them more resistant to stains and damage. It also allows for a wider range of colours and makes the tiles appear glossier. The drawback to glazed tiles is that they are also quite slippery.

Unglazed tiles do not have this coating applied to them, but must have a sealant applied to them every couple of years. They are rougher and earthier in appearance and come in fewer colour options. Because of their rugged surface, they are much less slippery than glazed tiles.

Fortunately, unglazed stone or ceramic tiles are currently a much more stylish choice for a floor than standard linoleum or glazed tiles. This makes them an excellent choice for your bathroom. These types of tiles create a more uniform, earth-toned look for your bathroom floor.

Small glass tiles also provide a good non-slip surface, since they create more grout lines per square foot.

Glass and ceramic tiles are a great choice in that they can be mixed and matched to create interesting designs through variations of both colour and size. This might be a more expensive option but well worth it to create a unique decor.

Whatever option you go for, remember that if you are planning on selling your house, going with more understated options for bathroom tiles might be a better idea. Neutral tones are a safer option for things that are glued down. Save the flashier colours for removable items like towels and curtains.
