Everything you need before your Mattioni appointment
Your Mattioni Field Supervisor is coming to evaluate your home and walk you through your options. This guide helps you ask the right questions and points you to everything you need to feel informed and confident when your Field Supervisor arrives.
1 Select your system type
2 Read up before your visit
3 Prepare for the conversation
Step 1. Identify your situation
What system are you focused on?
Select the option that best describes your current setup or what you're looking to replace. You'll get a tailored set of resources and questions specific to your visit.
Not sure what you have? No problem. Your Field Supervisor will identify it when they arrive. Just select what sounds closest, or the system you're most curious about.
Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Full System Replacement (AC & Furnace)
Replacing both your AC and furnace at the same time is one of the smartest investments a homeowner can make. It saves on labor, ensures compatibility between systems, and resets both warranties at once.

What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will assess your ductwork, evaluate both systems, and walk you through matched AC and furnace options across all efficiency tiers. Replacing both at once gives you greater flexibility in equipment selection and typically saves $2,000 to $5,000 in labor compared to two separate installs. If one system still has life left, they'll tell you.
Questions worth thinking about
- How old are both your furnace and AC? (If within a few years of each other, replacing together makes sense)
- Any comfort complaints — rooms that are too hot, too cold, or drafty?
- Have you noticed rising energy bills or more frequent repairs?
- Lower monthly bills or lower upfront cost — which matters more?
Why replace both at the same time?
Your AC and furnace share key components — most importantly the blower motor. When one is new and one is old, the mismatch reduces efficiency and accelerates wear on the newer unit. Replacing both together means your Field Supervisor can build a fully compatible system from the ground up, and you pay for one installation visit instead of two.

Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Not sure what you have? No problem.
Your Field Supervisor will identify your system and its condition when they arrive. In the meantime, here are the most useful resources for homeowners who are still exploring their options, covering all system types and the replacement process from start to finish.

Proactive vs. reactive

What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will begin by identifying your current system, assessing its condition and age, and discussing what's been working and where things have fallen short. From there, they'll walk you through your options across all relevant system types and help you understand what makes sense for your home. If your system just needs maintenance rather than replacement, they'll tell you that too.
Questions worth thinking about
- How long have you been having comfort or efficiency issues?
- Are your heating and cooling bills noticeably higher than they used to be?
- Do you have ductwork, radiators, or neither?
- Are you open to a different type of system, or do you want a like-for-like replacement?
Replacement vs. repair: what to know going in
Not every visit ends in a replacement recommendation. If your system is relatively young or the issue is straightforward, a repair or tune-up may be the right call. Your Field Supervisor will give you an honest assessment, including when it makes more financial sense to repair now and plan for replacement later.

Gas & Oil Furnaces
Whether you're replacing a failing furnace, adding central AC, or exploring an efficiency upgrade, here's what to know going in.

What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will assess your ductwork, walk you through single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed options — including compatible AC systems if relevant. If your system just needs a tune-up rather than a replacement, they'll tell you that too.
Questions worth thinking about
- How old is your current furnace? (12+ years = likely time to replace)
- Any rooms that never get warm enough?
- Are you replacing just heat, or heat and AC together?
- Lower monthly bill, or lower upfront cost?
Efficiency at a glance
Furnaces are rated by AFUE, which measures how much fuel becomes usable heat. An 80% AFUE rating means 80¢ of every dollar of gas heats your home. High-efficiency furnaces (90%+ AFUE) cost more upfront but offer lower monthly bills. Your Field Supervisor will help you find the right break-even point for your home.

Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Central Air Conditioning
Replacing a central AC is one of the most common home comfort projects. Here's how to go into your visit knowing what to prioritize.

What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will evaluate your ductwork, confirm compatibility with your furnace or air handler, and walk you through single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed options. If a repair is the right call instead, they'll say so.
Questions worth thinking about
- How old is your current AC? (10–12 years = assess carefully)
- Any rooms that stay hot even when the AC runs?
- Is your furnace close in age? (Replacing both together saves money)
- Lower monthly energy bills, or lower upfront cost?
Efficiency and sizing: what drives the decision
AC efficiency is measured by SEER2, the higher the rating, the less it costs to run. Sizing (in tons) must match your home's square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork. An oversized unit short-cycles and wastes energy; an undersized one runs constantly. Your Field Supervisor will determine the right fit.

Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are one of the most efficient options available. They heat and cool using a single system and can replace both your furnace and AC. New to the concept? Start with the cost guide below — it walks through what a heat pump is, how it works, and what installation looks like from start to finish.

What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will evaluate your ductwork, your existing furnace (if applicable), and your home's layout to identify the right heat pump type and configuration. They'll also assess whether a hybrid system makes the most sense for Greater Philadelphia winters. If your current system has more life left in it, they'll tell you that too.
Questions worth thinking about
- Do you have an existing furnace or air handler?
- Do you want to eliminate gas entirely, or keep a gas backup?
- Year-round energy savings, or lower upfront cost?
Heat pumps in our climate
Greater Philadelphia winters are cold but manageable for modern heat pumps. Cold-climate models perform reliably down to 0°F. For the coldest stretches, a hybrid setup that pairs a heat pump with your existing gas furnace lets you save energy most of the year while keeping gas as a backup when it's most efficient.

Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Ductless Mini Splits
Mini splits are ideal for homes without ductwork, or for adding zoned comfort to specific areas. They deliver both heating and cooling in one system.
Start Here
Is a mini split right for me?
Mattioni Learning Center — Mini Splits
What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will walk through your home to determine the right number of zones, where units would be mounted, and whether a cold-climate model is the right fit for southeastern PA winters. If an existing system just needs service, they'll tell you.
Questions worth thinking about
- Which rooms need heating and cooling most consistently?
- Are you replacing a boiler, or supplementing existing heat?
- Are you comfortable with wall-mounted indoor units?
- Any preference for wall, ceiling cassette, or floor-mounted heads?
Zones and sizing: what drives cost
The number of indoor heads is the biggest cost variable. One head for a room addition is a very different project from a whole-home, multi-zone install. Proper sizing directly affects both comfort and long-term efficiency, and your Field Supervisor will recommend the right configuration for your home.

Step 2. Your tailored reading list
Boilers
Boiler homeowners have more options than most, from targeted efficiency upgrades to full replacements and hybrid mini split setups.

Boiler buyer's guide
Mattioni Learning Center — Boilers
What to expect from your visit
Your Field Supervisor will inspect your existing boiler, radiators, and piping, then walk you through whether a repair, efficiency upgrade, or full replacement makes the most sense. They'll also explore whether adding a mini split for cooling or hybrid year-round comfort is a good fit for your home. Sometimes a component upgrade is the smarter move, and they'll tell you when that's the case.
Questions worth thinking about
- How old is your boiler? (15+ years = assess carefully)
- Are you on oil? A fuel conversion may lower long-term costs.
- Do you have a separate cooling system, or none at all?
- Are your pipes and radiators in good condition?
Your upgrade path options
Boiler owners have choices beyond a straight swap: upgrade components to boost efficiency from 80% to 90%+ AFUE, convert fuel sources, replace with a new high-efficiency model, or add mini splits alongside your boiler for a hybrid system that handles cooling and mild-weather heating more efficiently.
