Finding a trustworthy heating and AC service provider can be difficult. Here’s a quick checklist to use when evaluating HVAC companies in your area.
–
Are you overwhelmed by the sheer number of HVAC companies in your area, and unsure which one to trust with your home’s comfort?
Evaluating which heating and AC service provider is right for you and your family can often be daunting. The search isn’t only for fast and reliable service, but expertise, trustworthiness, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
The Mattioni HVAC team has seen service providers of all shapes and sizes, so we know that the specific company you choose will determine the quality of work you receive and your overall experience.
When we’re talking about heating and air conditioning systems, a quality installation will set it up for optimal performance, efficiency, and longevity. A poor installation, however, can potentially set it up for substandard operation and a greater likelihood of running into issues.
Contractor work can have the potential to be an enjoyable experience or an inconvenience to your life, so we put together this checklist of qualities to look for in a heating and cooling company as you make your decision.
Taking the time to appropriately evaluate your local heating and AC service providers will set you on the path for an enjoyable experience and years of comfort in your home.
1. Licensed, Insured, and EPA Certified
If you’re speaking with an independent contractor, confirm with them early on that they’re licensed and insured. These are standard thresholds for handling residential HVAC projects in Pennsylvania, so failing to hold an active Home Improvement Contractor License and small business insurance indicates that this service provider may not be well-equipped to work on your home.
EPA certifications, such as the 608 Certification, are also set in place to ensure that all contractor work is done in accordance with regulations surrounding refrigerants and large appliances like heating and cooling systems. Failing to hold this regulation is another red flag to be aware of, as it could lead to a code violation and energy efficiency issues.
Active licensing, insurance, and EPA certifications should be no issue with most large companies, however, if you’re speaking with a smaller company or an independent contractor, these are perfectly good questions to ask. Holding all three of these is a green flag and the first item on our checklist.
2. High Number of Positive Online Reviews
You should check the online reviews for any service provider you speak with, as this can give you insights into their reputation surrounding previous work and past customers. Be sure to look at the number of positive reviews as well as the negative reviews. Read as many of both as you need to feel comfortable with contacting them or crossing them off your list.
You may also want to ask for pictures of past work, however, be aware that it’s relatively easy for a contractor to pass off someone else’s work as their own.
3. Verbal and Visual Professionalism
Don’t hesitate to take note of the professionalism of each heating and AC company that you speak with; it’s often foreshadowing your entire experience. Friendly and courteous language and behavior, tucked-in and clean shirts, and smiling faces are all signs of a quality company.
The opposite is also true. If you have to wait over a day for a call back to schedule an appointment, it likely means that the service provider has too much on his plate and might sacrifice quality workmanship and customer service for a higher volume of work.
Pay attention to all of these qualities during a phone call or consultation, as little things like these add up to the overall professionalism of the company. It can be either a big green flag to move forward, or a major warning sign not to.
4. A Strong Background in Heating and Cooling Service or Installation
Getting to know the person who will be providing your HVAC services will help you learn how long they’ve been in the industry, where they learned the trade, and can help build trust before signing a contract.
It’s a good idea to ask “How did you end up working in heating and cooling services?” The answer you receive to this question can tell a lot about the person you’re speaking with, especially with an independent contractor.
The landscape of heating and AC professionals is a wide spectrum; you may learn that this person has been in the heating and cooling industry for several decades, or that they only recently entered the field.
Don’t be afraid to evaluate companies based on their experience. This consideration can prevent headaches down the road and ensure that you’re in good hands.
Deciding to Move Forward or to Keep Looking
By following this checklist, you can confidently choose a heating and cooling company that meets all your needs and ensures long-term comfort in your home.
