What is an Air Handler?
An air handler is the indoor part of an all-electric HVAC unit. It is the main indoor component of a central AC, or heat pump that is not connected to a separate heating source. What an air handler does is it pulls the air from your home and pushes it over a coil that’s either hot or cold, depending on if you’re calling for heating or calling for cooling mode. It pushes the air over and across that coil and up out into your home, to be dispersed from room to room, to either heat or cool your home.
Why Do I Need an Air Handler?
An air handler is what pushes air throughout your home. So if you have a heat pump that’s the main source of heat for your home, then you need an air handler to move the air. If you have a ducted AC system and your heating source is radiant heat like a boiler or baseboard heating, then you need an air handler that’s going to move the cool air from the AC throughout your home. If you have a furnace, you would not need an air handler, as the furnace houses a blower motor similar to the blower motor and an air handler and your furnace is what’s going to move air throughout your home.
How Much Does an Air Handler Installation Cost?
That’s going to depend on a number of factors. What’s the size of the air handler? The efficiency of the air handler. And what’s the unique setup of the air handler in your home? All in all, installing an air handler could cost you between $7,000 and $9,000.
