What Type Of Thermostat Is Right For Me?

Video Transcript:

Hi. I’m Max with Mattioni Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. Thermostats are the heart of your home, allowing you to precisely control your comfort year round. In this video, we are looking at the different types of thermostats that are available today and which type could be the best fit for you and your home.

What type of thermostats are there?

Three types of thermostats available on the market today are basic thermostats, digital programmable thermostats, and smart thermostats. All of them have advantages and disadvantages. So let’s take a look at each of them separately and see what type would be right for you.

The first type of thermostat is going to be your basic thermostat. This is the simplest type of thermostat on the market. They require you to make all changes by hand at the thermostat itself, but can be less efficient due to lack of features and accuracy. They are also going to be the cheapest option of the three types of thermostats, costing around $300 to $500 to purchase and install. They also feature an average lifespan of about 15 years.

Our second type of thermostat available is the digital programmable thermostat. Similar to basic thermostats, they need to be controlled at the thermostat itself. However, they do allow you to set schedules that can turn your heat or AC up or down automatically, saving you money on energy bills and improving your comfort throughout the day. They are also relatively inexpensive to purchase, ranging from about $500 to $600 to purchase and install. They also have an average lifespan of about 15 years.

The third option available are smart thermostats. These are the most high tech thermostat option available. They offer all the same scheduling features of programable thermostats, but are also loaded with other features. The features vary by model, but could include smart scheduling, which can adjust your schedule to save even more money on energy bills by looking at things like your normal usage and whether or not you’re actually in the home. They also feature external temperature sensors, which can allow you to place temperature sensors in other parts of the home to maximize your comfort further. They also come standard with app integration and Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing you to set and change your schedules in real time from your phone. There are also other features, depending on model that you can see benefits from, so ask your technician what could be the right option for you. They are, however, the most expensive of the options, costing anywhere from $600 to $1,200 to purchase and install. They also feature an average lifespan of about ten years.
