If your garbage disposal suddenly stops working, don’t panic. In many cases, it’s either jammed or just needs to be reset.
Today, I’ll show you how to safely on jam and reset your garbage disposal in just a few minutes. Before you begin, make sure the disposal is turned off at the wall switch for added safety. You can also unplug the disposal or turn off the breaker if it’s accessible. Never put your hand inside the disposal even if you think the power is off.
Using a flashlight. Look inside the disposal for anything that doesn’t belong, like a utensil, bottle, cap, or other debris. If you see an object, use tongs or pliers to carefully remove it. Never use your hands. If you don’t see anything or the disposal still won’t turn. Locate the hex shaped opening on the bottom of the disposal. Insert a quarter inch Allen wrench and gently turn it back and forth several times. This helps free up minor jams that can prevent the motor from spinning. Once the disposal turns freely, locate the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it is popped out, press it firmly until it clicks back into place.
Now turn on cold water and switch the disposal back on. Iit starts running normally, you’re all set. If the disposal still doesn’t work, make sure it’s plugged in and check that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. If the reset button won’t stay in the disposal, continues to hum without spinning. Repeatedly trips the breaker or is leaking. It’s time to call a professional.
