Reasons Your Pilot Light Keeps Going Out

If your pilot light is malfunctioning, the root of the problem is not always clear. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the potential causes of pilot light issues, some of the most common being:

  • The furnace needs to be cleaned; the flame sensor or pilot assembly could be dirty
  • The pilot light has blown out
  • There is a thermocouple issue
  • Your circuit breaker has tripped
  • Your unit’s burners are rusty
  • The air filter needs to be changed
  • The safety switch is open
  • Strong winds or drafts

Relighting Your Pilot Light: How To

If your pilot light isn’t working, there are steps to take to get it relit:

  • Find your furnace’s gas valve
  • Turn the valve to “off” for at least three minutes
  • From there, switch it to “pilot” mode
  • Light a match and hold it up to the pilot opening, hit “reset” on the pilot control, and hold it down until the pilot flame is lit
  • Set the pilot valve to “on”

Why Is the Pilot Light On, But My Furnace Isn’t?

If your pilot light is on but your furnace isn’t operating correctly, your system has another issue. A lit pilot light on a furnace that isn’t producing heat can indicate a problem with the gas valve, thermostat, or control board. There may also not be enough fuel in the gas valve. You should also check to see if the inducer motor is running. If all else fails, there may be an issue with how the furnace was originally installed.
