Are you planning to switch from oil to natural gas but are confused about who handles what? Many people are surprised to learn that while PECO provides your natural gas hookup, they don’t handle most of the installation work. In fact, the majority of the project is handled by your contractor.
For over 75 years, we’re helped countless homeowners in southeastern Pennsylvania make this switch – and we know one of the first questions people ask is: “Do I call PECO first, or do I call you?”
In this article, we’ll help you understand:
- What PECO is responsible for (and what they aren’t)
- What Mattioni handles from start to finish
- How the oil-to-gas conversion process really works
- What to expect during installation, permitting, and activation
Let’s take the confusion out of this process – and help you make the switch with total confidence.
The Big Question: Who Does What?
When switching from oil to natural gas, homeowners often assume PECO takes care of everything. In reality, PECO’s role is limited to delivering the gas to your property line. From there, Mattioni does the heavy lifting – installing your service line, equipment, and handling all permitting and inspections.
Clarity on these roles helps you avoid delays, surprises, and miscommunications. Here’s the real division of responsibility:
PECO’s Role: Gas Access Point Installation Only
PECO is your utility provider, and their job is to make natural gas available to your home – not to install systems or connect the gas line inside your house. Specifically, PECO handles:
1. Installing the Gas Access Point (Curb Valve or Stub)
PECO brings the gas line from the main line under your street and installs a curb valve – a capped access point typically located near your property line or sidewalk. This is as far as PECO goes.
This valve allows Mattioni experts to connect to the gas main and run the line into your home.
2. Gas Meter Installation and Activation
Once a licensed Mattioni expert has installed your interior service line and new natural gas heating equipment, PECO returns to activate the meter and open the curb valve – but only after the work passes local inspections.
PECO Does Not:
- Install or connect the service line from the curb to your home
- Provide or install heating or water heating equipment
- Manage permits or schedule inspections
- Remove oil tanks or old equipment
Mattioni’s Role: Full Gas Service and Equipment Installation
Mattioni handles everything beyond the curb valve – from the service line to the heating system. Our licensed experts manage everything to do with the oil-to-gas conversion on your property.
Here’s what we do:
1. Service Line Installation from the Curb to Your Home
Once PECO installs the access point, our team installs the underground gas service line that runs from the curb valve to your home’s exterior wall – where the meter is mounted. We handle trenching, piping, pressure testing, and code compliance.
2. System Education & Equipment Selection
There are dozens of natural gas heating systems, so it’s important that you become educated enough to make a confident decision for your home’s future comfort. We’ll answer all of your questions so that your choice makes sense for all of your priorities.
We evaluate your current oil system, home layout, and heating needs to recommend the right high-efficiency natural gas furnace, boiler, or water heater. If you want to upgrade multiple systems at once, we’ll help you plan for future flexibility.
3. New Natural Gas Heating System Installation
Mattioni will remove your old oil-burning equipment and install your new gas system – including connecting all piping, venting, and smart controls. Every installation meets local code requirements and energy efficiency standards.
4. Permits & Township Inspections
We take care of all required permits and coordinate township inspections to verify the safety and compliance of the installation. This is a key step before PECO can activate your meter.
Who Should You Call First?
Call Mattioni first.
As your natural gas installation contractor, we coordinate the full project – including communication with PECO – and make sure the timeline flows efficiently. We confirm gas availability, schedule the curb valve installation, and ensure all interior work is ready before requesting PECO activation.
If you start by calling PECO, they may install the access point but won’t move forward until you’ve hired a licensed contractor to complete the rest. That means more waiting and more coordination on your part.
When you call Mattioni first, we handle all of it – so you don’t have to.
