If you find a water leak in your home. Do you know which valve to turn? Today I’m going to show you how to locate and use the water shut off valves in your home and which one matters most in an emergency.
If water is actively flowing where it shouldn’t be. You need to find your main water shut off valve. Your main shut off is usually in the basement along the front wall of your home, near your water meter, in a utility closet, crawlspace, or sometimes in the garage. In colder climates, like here in the northeast, it’s almost always inside the home. Be sure to locate this valve so you know where to go if a plumbing emergency arises.
There are two common types of main water valves. Gate valves have a round handle like this that you would turn clockwise to shut off. Ball valves have a lever handle. If the handle is parallel to the pipe it is on. If it is perpendicular to the pipe, it is off. Remember, if the valve is old or hasn’t been used in a long time, do not force it as that can cause the valve to break and potentially leak.
Most fixtures have their own shut off valve. These are usually located under sinks, behind toilets and near appliances like washing machines to shut them off. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. If just one fixture has a problem, this is the valve you want to use. Be sure not to force these valves, as some older ones may corrode, open or shut, and forcing them can cause a leak.
Once you have the water turned off, you’ve stopped the immediate problem, which helps prevent further damage. Water issues are stressful, but knowing where your shut off valves are puts you back in control. If you ever need help with your plumbing issues, we’re here when you need us.
