How To Replace Your Furnace Filter

Video Transcript

Do you remember the last time your furnace filter was changed? If you don’t, it’s probably time to change it. Today, I’ll show you how to find and replace your furnace filter. And it only takes a couple of minutes.

Your furnace filter is most commonly located inside or right next to your furnace, but in some homes it may also be installed in return air vents on walls or ceilings. Once you found it, carefully remove the cover or panel and slide the filter out. If it’s in a wall or ceiling vent, you may need to open or and screw the grille before removing the filter. Once you remove the old filter. Look at the edge. You’ll see numbers like 16 by 25 by 1 or 20 by 20 by four. Those are the dimensions of your filter. You can use this to make sure you order the correct filter, or that your replacement matches your system.

Now let’s install your new filter. Look for the arrow on the side of the filter. That arrow should point toward the furnace in the direction of airflow. If your filter is at the unit, slide it in securely and close the panel. If it’s located in a wall or ceiling return, place the filter into the vent grill and secure the cover. For some filters, you may need to press the magnets into place before sliding it in.

How often should you replace your filter? It depends on the size of the filter in your system. For smaller one inch filters, they should be replaced every 1 to 3 months. For larger 4 or 5 inch filters, they should be replaced about every six months. If you have pets, allergies, construction dust, or a larger household, you may need to change your filter more often. Setting a reminder on your phone or writing it on your calendar can help you remember when you need to change it next.

Your furnace filter takes just a few minutes and it can extend the life of your system. If something doesn’t seem right, we’re here when you need us.
