If your furnace suddenly stops working, sometimes a simple reset is all it takes to get things running again. Today, I’ll show you where furnace shut off switches are commonly located, and how to safely reset your furnace before calling for service.
Most furnaces have a dedicated power switch located nearby. It often looks just like a regular light switch, and may be mounted on the side of the furnace, on a nearby wall, or at the top of the basement stairs. Sometimes the switch can accidentally get turned off during cleaning, storage, or other work around the home.
If your furnace is not working. Start by making sure the switch is in the on position. If the furnace isn’t responding, you can also try resetting it by turning the switch off, waiting about 10s, and turning it back on. Once power is restored, give the furnace a few minutes to restart.
If it is still not working, or if you do not see a switch. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Look for any breaker labeled furnace, HVAC or heating. If one appears tripped, flip it fully off first, then back on
Sometimes resetting the furnace can resolve small issues like a temporary system lockout or a thermostat communication issue. If the furnace starts running normally again, you’re all set.
If the system still isn’t running properly after resetting it, there may be a larger issue that needs professional attention. Call a professional. If the breaker continues to trip, the furnace turns on and immediately shuts back off. You smell something burning. The system makes unusual noises, or the furnace still won’t start after resetting the power.
Resetting your furnace only takes a few minutes, and can sometimes solve simple heating issues without the need for a service call. And if you need help. We’re here when you need us.
