Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Spring has a way of sneaking up on all of us. One day you’re running your heat, and the next you’re wondering if your AC is ready for the summer.Â
The truth is, the transition between seasons (right around April) is one of the best time to give your home’s utilities a little attention before temperatures climb into the 90s.Â
The good news? Most of these tasks are simple, affordable, and well within reach for the average homeowner. And when you need a bit of assistance, a professional tune-up goes a long way, too. In this article, we’ll share 8 springtime tasks that’ll save you from uncomfortable surprises later.Â
At Mattioni, we’ve been helping homeowners stay ahead of seasonal maintenance for over 75 years. Here’s your springtime to-do list that we recommend every homeowner put on their radar.Â
Â
Â
1. Change Your Air Filters
Your air filter is the front line of defense for both your HVAC equipment and the air your family breathes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forces your system to work harder, and lets dust and allergens circulate, which matters even more during spring allergy season. Â
Check your filter for clogged dust and debris, and swap it out at least once every three months. It’s a simple HVAC maintenance task that’ll set your cooling system up for efficient performance as spring turns to summer.Â
Â
2. Replace the UV Bulb in Your Air Scrubber
If you have a UV air scrubber system hooked up in your ductwork, the bulb inside must be replaced once a year to maintain its performance. Even if the light still appears to be working, UV output degrades over time, meaning your system isn’t actually cleaning the air the way it should be. Â
Spring is the best time of year to swap it. You can purchase a replacement bulb and do it yourself in a few minutes, or your HVAC technician can handle it during your tune-up.
Â
Â
3. Schedule a Professional AC Tune-Up
Spring is the perfect time to have your air conditioning system inspected before you need it on a daily basis. A professional tune-up catches worn parts, low refrigerant, and dirty coils before they turn into a mid-July breakdown, which is when many HVAC companies are busiest.Â
Call early at (610) 400-8510 and get on the schedule, and you’ll head into summer knowing your system is dialed in and running efficiently.Â
Â
4. Clean and Clear the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Your outdoor AC unit just spent all winter collecting leaves, dirt, grass clippings, and debris. When the condenser coil is blocked, your system can’t release heat efficiently, which means it runs longer, works harder, and costs you more.Â
Trim back any bushes or shrubs at least two feet around the unit, gently rinse the coil fins with a garden hose (not a pressure washer), and remove any debris sitting on or around the unit.Â
Â
Â
5. Shut Down Your Whole-House Humidifier for the Season
If you have a whole-house humidifier tied into your HVAC system, spring is the time to turn it off for the warmer months. Â
Turn the unit off, close the bypass damper, and replace the water panel or media pad so it’s fresh and ready to go when heating season returns in the fall.Â
Â
6. Schedule a Plumbing Tune-Up (or DIY Water Heater Maintenance)
Just like your AC, your plumbing system benefits from an annual checkup, and spring is the ideal time to get one on your schedule. A professional plumbing tune-up covers things like water heater performance, supply line inspections, and checking for hidden leaks.Â
If you’d rather tackle one piece yourself, start with your water heater: flush the tank by connecting a garden hose to the drain valve and running it until the water is clear. Then pull the anode rod from the top of the drain valve and run it until the water is clear. Check it for corrosion, if it’s worn thin, replacing it now can add years to your water heater’s life.Â
Â
7. Turn on Exterior Hose Bibs & Check for Freeze Damage
If you shut off your outdoor faucets for the winter (and you should have), spring is the time to slowly turn them back on and check for problems. Frozen pipes can crack without showing any visible signs outside, and you won’t know until water is leaking inside your walls or foundation. Â
Open the shut-off valve inside, then go outside and turn on the spigot. Have someone watch the interior pipes for drips or spraying while you do it.Â
Â
8. Test Your Sump Pump
Your sump pump sits quietly in the basement all winter, and you don’t want to find out it’s failed during the first heavy spring rain. A failed sump pump can mean thousands of dollars in water damage in a matter of hours.Â
Pour about 5 gallons of water from a bucket into the sump pit, if it kicks on and drains the water, you’re good to go. If it doesn’t, it’s time to call a plumber before storm season hits.Â
Â
Â

You don’t need to be extra handy to take care of your home, you just need a plan. Knocking out even a few of these tasks this spring puts you ahead of most homeowners and sets your HVAC and plumbing system up for a smooth, stress-free summer.Â
